On the ball with the pointy ends

On the ball with the pointy ends

The reason that American footballs have pointy ends is because this design makes it fly better when it is thrown correctly.

The pointy ends also makes the ball do unpredictable things when it bounces. (Just ask Brandon Stokely.)

Therefore, unpredicatable things tend to happen in the game of gridiron.

These unpredictable things are they reason we watch the game. If we knew what was going to happen beforehand, the mystery would be gone.

Who knew, for example, that Houston would upset Oklahoma State this week? Who outside of Salt Lake City would have wagered that BYU would beat Oklahoma last week? I guess since they are Mormons even they wouldn’t have made that bet.

There are too many factors that determine the outcome of a game, including but not limited to team chemistry, emotion, health, weather conditions, luck, and referee bias.

I suppose the guy who can get a read on the team psychology can gain an edge. The tricky thing is gauging that psychology. For example, a team usually plays better after a loss, i.e. they get more fired up for the next game. However, losing a few in a row tends to send teams into disarray.

I predict my prediction percentage will continue to hover around the .500 mark. (Or perhaps fall a bit below)

The game is tough to predict, even for the experts and I am not exactly an expert.

I am a fan.
